Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: Mental health is an important part of the overall health. Studies have shown that medical students and physicians are more susceptible to mental distress, which can lead to professional dysfunction. The aim of this study was to assess the mental health of medical sciences students of Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences in 2010. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in southern Iran. A total of 217 students participated in this study. GHQ-28 questionnaire was distributed and mental dysfunction of four domains including somatic symptoms, anxiety, depression and social function were screened. Students with a cutoff point of above 23 were considered as high risk for mental disorders. Results: The mean GHQ-28 score of the participants was 20.11 ± 10.105 and 36.7% of all students were abnormal and at risk for psychiatric disorders. Also, our study showed that field of study and place of residence are strongly associated with being prone to mental disorders (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The long-term effect of psychiatric disorders should not manipulate policy makers and the character that is being built, and its effects on future students and patients should not leave authorities’ minds. As shown above, many studies have shown high prevalence of psychiatric distress among medical sciences students. Keeping long-term effects and high prevalence in mind, every policy that improves this situation is cost benefit and action should be performed, immediately.
