Evaluation of operating properties of Filtek Z550 composite material according to Ryge – preliminary report

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. To meet the expectations regarding the materials for permanent restorations, the 3M ESPE company designed a novel nanohybrid Filtek Z 550 restorative. The objective of the study was to assess the clinical properties of Filtek Z550 restorative for carious lesions of various classes according to Black’s classification. Material and methods. Fillings were placed in 30 patients, aged 17-61 years, including 19 female and 11 male patients. In total, 52 fillings were placed in carious lesions of Class I, II, II, IV and V according to Black. Fillings were assessed twice:) immediately after placement and during follow-up 6 months later. During the follow-up examination, the aesthetic and clinical properties were assessed using the 4-grade Ryge scale, which involves the surface structure, anatomical form, marginal adhesion and retention of fillings. Results. Six months after placement, Filtek Z550 restorations manifested the highest surface smoothness, anatomical form and colour. Moreover, 92.3% of fillings showed very good marginal adhesion. In four restorations (7.7%), the marginal damage was observed which required correction without replacement; in their vicinity, no secondary caries was found. Conclusion. The comparative study findings demonstrate that Filtek Z550 is characterised by high quality and fulfils the expectations of both dentists and patients.
