EVALUATION OF PERIPHERAL SMEAR AND BONE MARROW IN PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH PANCYTOPENIA

Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 29

Abstract

BACKGROUND Pancytopenia is a relatively common clinico-haematological entity with many aetiological conditions. The aim of this study is to compare the incidence of various causes and clinical presentations of pancytopenia and to analyse the spectrum of bone marrow pathology in pancytopenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS It is a prospective cross-sectional study carried over a period of 10 months from January 2017 to October 2017 in Dept. of Pathology, Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, Coimbatore. Peripheral smear and bone marrow examination were performed in 57 cases who were fulfilling the criteria for pancytopenia. RESULTS Out of 57 cases of pancytopenia examined, the age of patients ranged from 3 months to 75 years with a female predominance. In the present study, the predominant blood picture was dimorphic anaemia and the commonest causes were found to be megaloblastic anaemia (63%) and haematological malignancies (18%). CONCLUSION A comprehensive approach with clinical findings and detailed primary haematological investigations along with bone marrow aspiration smear study can diagnose the causes in majority of pancytopenia cases. This helps in planning further investigations, management and understanding the disease process.
