Evolution of Mg-5Al-0.4Mn microstructure after rare earth elements addition
Journal Title: Archiwum Odlewnictwa - Year 2011, Vol 11, Issue 2
Abstract
Mg-5Al-0.4Mn-xRE (x = 0, 1, 2, 3 wt.%) magnesium alloys were prepared successfully by casting method. The microstructure was investigated by light microscopy. The influence of rare earth (RE) elements on the area fraction of eutectic was analysed. The obtained results revealed that the as-cast Mg-5Al-0.4Mn alloy consist of α - Mg matrix and eutectic α + γ (where γ is Mg17Al12). However, while rare earth elements were added to the Mg-Al type alloy, Al11RE3 precipitates were formed. The amount of the Al11RE3 precipitates increased with increasing addition of RE, but the amount of γ - Mg17Al12 decreased.

Effect of ring notch radius on the decohesion mode in AlSi alloys
The article discusses the effect of the, determined by tensile test, non-linear characteristics of AlSi alloys on the value of the shape factor k for the three different sizes of the radius of the ring notch made on roun...
Primary and secondary crystallization of modified hypoeutectic chromium cast iron
The paper presents investigations of crystallization of modified hypoeutectic wear resistant chromium cast iron which contains carbon about 2% and chromium on three levels (12%, 18% and 25%). Three substances were applie...
Modern precise high-power water-cooling systems for press quenching
Demand for extrusions in transport applications is increasing rapidly. The extrusions must be strong, light, crashworthy and may have to undergo hydroforming. This implies low wall thicknesses (1-2½ mm) in strong alloys...
