EVOLUTION OF THE TITLES OF FRENCH LITERARY TEXTS

Abstract
The present article presents the developmental trends of the titles of French literary texts of the XVII-XX centuries on the basis of the investigation of their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic structures. During the period of the 17-20th centuries the TFLTs suffered significant changes in the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic structure and from reduplicated titles and long sentences used as titles with a simple direct nomination and explicitly transmitted factual information of the 17-18th centuries, they transformed into short metaphorical/fragmentary/symbolic titles of the 20th century containing conceptual information implicitly and representing the pragmatic orientation of the author. During the period of the 17-20th centuries in developmental dynamics of the titles of French literary texts (TFLTs) two interrelated trends are revealed: a) language economy and b) Pragmatism.
