Excellence models. The benefits and limitations

Abstract
This paper examines the popularity and applicability of business excel-lence models among the enterprises and organizations worldwide, with the emphasis on EFQM and CAF models. The article, based on the theoretical background and on the author’s own research, presents the situation relating to the models’ implementation, as well as the advantages and limitations connected with. The findings of the paper show that business excellence models, particularly the process of the self-assessment, are very successful tools for the organizational and financial per-formance improvement. However the model implementation requires the awareness of the major shortcomings and limitations connected with, like bu-reaucracy, unhealthy elitism, “certificate syndrome” and relatively high costs of the award scheme participation.
