EXPANSÃO DO CAPITAL E DESENVOLVIMENTO REGIONAL: FOZ DO IGUAÇU ENTRE O LEGAL E O ILEGAL

Abstract
The tourism sector of Foz do Iguacu moves a significant amount of capital and is regarded by local entrepreneurs to the region’s main economic activity. This obscures the role that the economic relations established between groundwater Brazil and Paraguay have on the local economy and also the set of social practices “informal” generated by the frequent movement of people, money and goods. The article discusses the development of tourism and hospitality sector in the region, highlighting its economic impact, for, in a second time, to investigate the links between this development and a set of the darkest situations, such as the use of hotels for the storage of goods smuggled from Paraguay, the conflicting redefinition of the commercial spaces in the city from its use by street vendors and the process of operating a manpower tied to low wages and an ill-defined working hours.
