Expenditure-Based Economic Contribution Model of Universities: Gümüşhane University Example

Abstract
Universities have significant impact on the economic, social and cultural structure of the cities where they are founded. Universities play an important role in the revitalization of the economy especially in cities where the share of the industry is low. For this reason, it is important to determine the level of economic contribution of universities to cities. The aim of this study is to establish and operate an expenditure-based economic contribution model of the universities The data obtained from Gümüşhane University, university staff and students were used in the study. Data from the staff and students were collected by questionnaire method. A different questionnaire form was used for both groups. As a result of the study, "Expenditure-Based Economic Contribution Model" has been developed in line with expenditures and expenditures distributions of personnel and students. In addition to the model, the economic contribution level of Gümüşhane University for the years 2009-2016 has been calculated. In 2016, it has been determined that the contribution of Gümüşhane University to the urban economy is about 172 million Turkish Lira.
