Experimental investigation on possible dependence of plastic zone size on specimen geometry
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2009, Vol 3, Issue 7
Abstract
In this investigation the extent of the plastic zone size ahead of a crack-tip in single edge notched tension (SENT), compact tension (CT) specimens has been examined experimentally by micro-hardness technique and by elastic-plastic finite element analyses at different applied load levels. The magnitudes of the plastic zone size (PZS), rp ahead of crack-tip in the investigated specimens have been compared using normalized J-integral (J/aσy, where, a-crack length and σy-yield stress of the material). The results show the dependence of PZS on specimen geometry due to varied in-plane crack-tip constraint. The results also demonstrate that the existing analytical models do not explain the experimental results of PZS satisfactorily.

Effective properties of a new auxetic triangular lattice:an analytical approach
In this article we propose a new auxetic periodic lattice with negative Poisson's ratio which tends tothe limit ν=-1 under particular conditions. We have studied its generation and kinematic, and we give a fulldesc...
Synchrotron 3D characterization of arrested fatigue cracks initiated from small tilted notches in steel
High resolution synchrotron X-ray tomography has been used to obtain 3D images of arrested cracks initiated at small artificial defects located on the surface of cylindrical steel specimens subjected to mode I fa...
Time and frequency domain models for multiaxial fatigue life estimation under random loading
Engineering structures and components are often subjected to random fatigue loading produced, for example, by wind turbulences, marine waves and vibrations. The methods available in the literature for fatigue ass...
Experimental investigation of crack initiation and propagation in high- and gigacycle fatigue in titanium alloys by study of morphology of fracture
Fatigue (high- and gigacycle) crack initiation and its propagation in titanium alloys with coarse and fine grain structure are studied by fractography analysis of fracture surface. Fractured specimens were analyze...
