Experimentally induced gastric ulceration on guinea pigs and study of protection afford by ambrex (a poly herbal drugs) and sucralfate

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pharmacology - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Problem Statement Gastric ulcer is a very common disease now a days and with a increasing incidence. It is more common in males than females and prevalent between people 50-65 years. In the present study acute gastric ulceration has been induced by orally 1 ml of 80% Ethanol and the effect of Sucralfate and Ambrex (a poly herbal drugs) has been studied in the ethanol induced ulcer in Guinea Pigs. Methodology: This study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology, M.G.M. Medical College and L.S.K. Hospital, Kishanganj, Bihar, from August 2015 to September 2016. The present study included adult guinea pigs of either sex weighing 300-600 gm. The animals were divided in two groups of 12 guinea pigs each for the experimental study of anti ulcer activity of drugs. Result: Ethanol treatment caused the increase in ulcer-index whereas Ambrex (a poly herbal drugs) treatment offered protection against the action of ethanol. Gastric acidity estimation has been done before and after giving drugs, i.e. Ambrex (a poly herbal drugs) (40mg/ kg body weight) and Sucralfate (100 mg/ kg body weight), which were given at the interval of 1 and 2 hours and after 6 hours, stomach of the sacrificed animals showed multiple hemorrhagic lesion. Severity of ulcer in most of the guinea pigs was mild (+). Conclusion: Increase in gastric acidity, ulcer index and gastric erosion have been found as the effect of ethanol treatment. Ambrex (a poly herbal drugs) and Sucralfate offered the protection in the experimental production of gastric ulcers and decrease both free and total acidity slightly and reduced the ulcer index significantly.
