Abstract

Modern social environment surrounding higher education, especially massiveness and increasing need towards accountability necessitate the rise of quality assurance in higher education. Improvement of quality for higher education became a priority objective in the reorganisation of the Lithuanian system of education and studies. The system of assessment of study quality and significance for assurance of study quality with regard to society and education are analysed in this paper. In the paper, a programme along wi th the analysis of the research on assessment of study quality are presented which were prepared by 2nd and 4th full-time students studying Special Education (branches: speech therapy, pedagogics of physical education for children with special needs, kinesitherapy) at Faculty of Social Welfare and Disability of Šiauliai University. One hundred and forty-four 2nd and 4th full-time bachelor students of Special Education (branches: speech therapy; physical education of children with spec ial needs, physical therapy) at Šiauliai University, Faculty of Social Welfare and Disability Studies participated in the survey. With the method of questionnaire survey, it was analysed how students of special educati on assess factors of study quality, how similar and how different are attitudes of students of different branches of this study pro gramme, what are strengths and weaknesses of the realisation of these studies. The research results demonstrated that students’ opinion on studies is related to objective factors, namely to the branch of study programme which is studied, the year of studies, motivati on for selection of studies. The research revealed that study quality is assessed by students in a different manner. Many factors influencing study quality have high assessment by students, however when expressing their opinions they also name vari ous imperfections related to the organisation of studies. In particular, future special educators missed larger theoretic correlations with practical activity. Third year students assess many areas more critically. Meanwhile, many assessments by second year students are higher. From the viewpoint of branches of the study programme, the students of speech therapy branch were more satisfied with their studies, and from the viewpoint of the year of studies it was second year students. It was ascertained that more students of speech therapy branch planned to link their career to the studied specialty, and they also gave higher assessment of their preparedness for work.
