FACTORS FACILITATING THE FORMATION OF MATHEMATICAL COMPETENCE OF THE FUTURE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the results of current researches regarding continuity in learning and to distinguish the main directions of continuity of mathematical preparation enabling the development of mathematical competence of the future primary school teachers. The results of the current researches regarding continuity in learning are analyzed. The attention is given to the importance of the factor of continuity in education, as it is, which facilitates the further overall development of mathematical competence taking into consideration the specificity of training in the pedagogical college. It is noted that the development process of mathematical competence of primary school teachers depends on the level of school leavers’ mathematical knowledge. Certain problematic aspects typical of this process are considered: the problem of partnership interrelations; future teachers’ creativity problem in their activity and cognitive independence while studying Mathematics; the problem of readiness and capability to systemize and summarize mathematical information, to see obscure aspects of mathematical phenomena. There is established an insufficient level of the college students’ preparedness in: mathematical thinking; fluency in theoretical knowledge of mathematics; conscious understanding of the methods of Mathematics. It is substantiated that it is important to acquaint students with the goals, objectives, contents and peculiarities of the elementary course of mathematics; the regulations the teacher must be guided by; the structure of the Maths class in elementary school. It is noted that the problem of continuity as a factor facilitating the development of mathematical competence is most effectively implemented at pedagogical colleges by means of the discipline "Methods of teaching Mathematics". It is grounded that continuity in education, if properly used in pedagogical colleges, opens opportunities for the development of mathematical competence of future teachers of primary school as well as further education at the teacher training universities. There have been designated and substantiated the main directions of continuity enabling the development of mathematical competence of the future primary school teachers: strengthening of professional orientation and motivation to obtain mathematical knowledge; taking into account the specificity of teaching mathematical disciplines at pedagogical colleges within the specialty "Primary education"; language and mathematical training within the study of the course "Methods of teaching mathematics"; implementation of the principle of continuity of learning through fundamentalization and integration in the process of the development of mathematical competence of the future primary school teachers; the formation of students’ needs and abilities for self-learning and further development of mathematical competence. It is noted that the development of mathematical competence of the future primary school teachers should be characterized by a professional orientation, mathematical knowledge, the ability to evaluate and analyze their own teaching activity; the ability to correct their drawbacks; striving for professional development.
