Failure Criterion of Scrap Tire Rubber Pads Under Axial Compression

Abstract
In order to further clarify the failure behavior of scrap tire pads ( STP) under pure pressure state, a more accurate criterion of axial compressive failure was proposed. The horizontal 6-layer STP of 180 mm × 180 mm was selected and tested for vertical limit performance. The change of bearing capacity, appearance damage and distribution of steel mesh after two loadings were analyzed. The results show that the fracture condition of steel mesh is closely related to the change of bearing capacity under pressure. The main reason for the inflection point of the STP load-displacement curve during secondary loading is that the steel wire net reaches the ultimate tensile stress and is partially fractured. On the basis of the failure of laminated rubber bearings, it is recommended that the fracture of STP internal steel wire mesh can be used as the determination index of the axial compressive failure. The minimum load of the load-displacement curve when the steel wire mesh is broken is selected as as the ultimate bearing capacity of STP in order to ensure the safety of design and use.
