Female sexual dysfunction: a review

Journal Title: Journal of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Sexual health is important for not just for women but also for their partners, the majority of whom are men, and this makes it an important concern for men’s health. Female sexual dysfunction is a relatively new area of study and is believed to be the result of multiple factors. It has been found to be relatively common, affecting about 30%-50% women.1 A recent health survey found that although almost 40-45% women suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction, only about a third of them ever seek medical help. It is more common in the older age groups and, if untreated, may be progressive with significant social and psychological effects. The same survey also found that an equal number of women are concerned about their partner’s sexual dysfunction and are more comfortable talking about it to their primary physician or gynecologist.2 A systematic review of prevalence rates of female sexual dysfunction revealed a mean rate of 64% for desire problems, 35% for orgasmic difficulties, 31% for arousal difficulties and 26% for sexual pain.3 This highlights the need for increased awarenessof this entity, both among physicians and patients, of this entity so that it may be diagnosed and treated appropriately.
