FEMININE IMAGE-SYMBOL OF IRELAND IN THE SELECTED IRISH POETRY WRITTEN IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: THE PROBLEM OF THE UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION

Abstract

The article at first analyzes feminine imagery of Ireland for example of the poem «The passing of the Gael» (the late 19th – the beginning of the 20th century) written in the English language by the famous Irish writer and journalist Ethna Carbery. The research offers the comparative analysis of the emblematics of Ireland that is the image of Kathleen Ni Houlihan mentioned by Ethna Carbery. This analysis is made in comparison with other images of Celtic culture (Welsh, Manx and so on). The experiment uses the examples from the Irish sagas (scels), the poetry by William Butler Yeats, the folk-ballad «My Little Black Rose» (»Risn Dubh», or «Dark Rosaleen») which has the Irish-Gaelic and English versions, etc. The image of the Gaels (the Irish nation) in this poem is compared with the mythical clan of fairy. There are motifs of nostalgia and emigration. The Celtic literature has a lot of allusions, and this tendency is proved because of cultural analysis. Thus, the symbolic of the poetry by Ethna Carbery is implicit. The problems of word-for-word about the lines, rhymes, etc. in the ukrainian translation are given. The attention is paid to the ukrainian translation studies. Also the research demonstrates the similar features of the Irish and ukrainian cultures. The methods are: poetological, linguistic, historical, contextual and comparative.
