Feminist Identity Development Model - theoretical basis, correlates and implications

Abstract
Summary: This paper provides an insight into the Feminist Identity Development model, as introduced by Downing and Rousch in 1985. It depicts the model as a phenomenon verging on the field of interest of clinical and social psychology. First, the brief introduction to the critical feminist approach in psychology is offered. Second, the basic theoretical assumptions underlying the model are presented along with the detailed description of five consecutive phases of development offered by the authors. The question is posed, whether it is possible to draw comparison between Feminist Identity Development model and other psychological developmental models. Eventually, the ways in which the model can be employed practically in counselling and therapy are described.
