Journal Title: Denizcilik Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2015, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

International maritime transportation sector has increased its occupational opportunities and has shifted towards a more profitable structure thanks to the phenomenon of globalization. However, the sudden changes and developments of the global economic system also brings unprecedented economic risks out. If those risks cannot be managed and controlled properly, they may pose various threats for the sustainability of the maritime management companies. In this paper, we aimed to define the financial risks which are specific for the maritime transport and tried to explain hedging against those risks by using financial derivative products with a case study. In conclusion, it is possible to state that in tramp maritime sector the most feasible derivative products are call options and forward deliveries due to their feature of adaptability to the management's self-conditions.
