Fingerprint and Speech Fusion: A Multimodal Biometric System

Abstract

Information security and authentication of person have become an important factor in security systems. Personal Identification Numbers or passwords and key devices such as smart cards are not reliable and accurate techniques in secure environments. Today biometric recognition is one of the most important techniques for the security. Single biometric systems suffer various problems such as noisy data, inter-class similarities, intra-class variations, non-universality and unacceptable error rate. To overcome these problematic issues, multimodal biometric systems are utilized. In this paper, a multimodal biometric system integrating fingerprint and speech in making a personal identification is introduced. The processed information is combined with the help of fusion algorithm in score level in which feature vectors are made independently for query images and are then compared to the enrollment templates which are stored during database preparation for each biometric trait. Based on the proximity of feature vector and template, each subsystem computes its own matching score. These systems provide preferable False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR) enjoying better recognition.
