Fishing Nets used in Sudan Freshwater Fisheries

Journal Title: Caspian Journal of Applied Sciences Research - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 8

Abstract

Sudan is endowed with freshwater resources represented in the Nile river and its tributaries, reservoirs and inland water. Therefore, fishing activity is considered one of the economic scheme performed in the Nile river. Fishing nets used in fishing activity are classified into three main categories: gillnets, surrounding nets and per-suit nets. Gillnets are divided into two common types: fixed nets (locally known as Rami nets and Um-Kubuk nets) and trammel nets (Locally known as Muwashasha nets). There are three fishing methods used in the Nile river. They are fixed method (locally known as Rami method), drift method (locally known as Jarr method) and surrounding method (locally known as Kar method). Fishermen used a long pole to make a beated-water in order to enmesh large numbers of fish into netting sheets of the Kar nets. Recently, they have been being used a piece of Aluminum to knock on if they are used a wooden fishing boat. They also have been used Alfa (fermented food) by spreading it on water surface to gather fish for catching by Kar net.
