Abstract

Witold Jarno FORMING 11TH INFANTRY DIVISION IN ŁODZ IN THE SPRING 1945 Article describes the process of forming 11th Infantry Division in Lodz and neighbouring cities in the spring 1945. This division was organized according to the plan of the extension of armed forces from the January of this year. Order about forming that division military powers gave in the half of the March, but because of the personnel and material lacks, the creating 11th division was finished just in the May already after finishing the II World War in Europe. Division consisted of 38, 40 and 42 Infantry Regiments, 33 Light Artillery Regiment, 16 Sapper Battalion and many smaller detachements. In the spring 1945 in the 11th Infantry Divison dominated officers of the Red Army, which filled the majority of higher commanders’ positions. First commander this division was also the officer of the Red Army colonel Andrew Czartoryski. The command of the division and 38 and 42 Infantry Regiments were formed in Lodz, 40 Infantry Regiment – in Pabianice, 33 Light Artillery Regiment – in Konstantynów Łodzki, meanwhile remaining detachements of this division – in the suburbs of Lodz. The 11th Infantry Division – similarly as 12, 13 and 14 Infantry Divisions – was created on the strenght of the war permanency (9.624 soldiers). The majority of them arrived to the division from reserve units or came from the mobilization carried out in the central Poland. Forming the division took place in very difficult conditions. It lacked practically all – and especially uniform and food. In the end of May, the headquarters of this divison received the order of leaveing the Lodz and redeploing all subordinated detachements in the direction of the river Odra. From this time 11th Infantry Division hasn’t had any relationships with Lodz, because since the autumn 1945 it has stationed in the western part of Silesia.
