Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Discussions of Islam and Democracy are very important issues which have a serious literature in these days. There are two main approaches whether Islam is compatible with democracy or not. The main concepts are sovereignty, shura (consultation), ijma, (consensus of fuqaha) and ijtihad (jurisprudence). The first approach claims that Islam is incompatible with democracy because of some basic principles. Both of some Western social scientists and Islamist thinkers share this thought. According to these scholars, Islam means that the sovereignty of God (Allah) but democracy is full of opposite this idea and it means that the sovereignty of people. This group defines democracy not only a system of governance but also style of life and philosophy. The second approach asserts that Islam doesn’t contradict with democracy. Muslims are free to choose any model among others in accordance with the historical and social circumstances.
