FRICTION, WEAR AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SILICONE COMPOSITES CONTAINING SURFACE MODIFIED MINERAL FILLERS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 241, Issue 1

Abstract

Products based on silicone rubber exhibit many unique properties. High resistance to ageing, the ability to be used in a wide range of temperature, limited swelling by oils and greases, and very good physiological compatibility, make silicone elastomers difficult to replace in many fields of engineering practice. Unfortunately, the relatively high price and low mechanical properties significantly reduces the possibility of their application. The most popular way to reduce cost and to improve the mechanical condition of rubber goods is the introduction of fillers into the rubber mix, prior submitting them to modification. The surface modification of the solid phase is made to enhance the compatibility of its particles with the elastomer matrix. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of different types of mineral fillers that are commonly available on mechanical properties and the friction properties of the silicone composites. Morphology of the composites has been analysed by microscopy (AFM, SEM). Their mechanical properties and friction characteristics have been determined. The influence of the degree of solid phase agglomeration, the shape and dimensions of its particles as well as the type of surface modification on mechanical properties in extension, and the friction and wear of the composites have been detected.
