FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE OF POLYMER MATERIALS DURING SLIDING ON ICE
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 239, Issue 5
Abstract
Specific properties of the water in the solid state (ice) allow sliding other solids on ice with low friction. There are some different phenomena that affect the friction during sliding polymer materials on ice. The authors present the results of the influence of ambient temperature (from -30 to -5°C) on the friction coefficient (static and kinetic) of selected plastics (thermoplastics: PTFE, POM PE-HD and elastomers: NBR, PUR, SI) during sliding on ice. Tribological investigations were carried out on the rig “pin-on-disk” which was placed in a climatic chamber. It enabled us to control the environment conditions. The results showed that the frictional coefficients of investigated materials decreases with temperature increase. The exceptions were the elastomeric materials (NBR, PUR), for which the reduction in the frictional coefficient was observed at temperatures below -20°C. The reason was the change in the elasticity (stiffness) of these materials together with the temperature decrease.
