Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42
Abstract
The concept of identity, we hear or talk about much more with the postmodern period, also appears as an art subject like the other disciplines such as politics, sociology, philosophy and psychology. Taking art history into consideration, especially with the period of Enlightenments, the forefront of the emergence of the individual, questioning himself and his environment and trying to define it shows that ‘identity’ is not only the subject of postmodern period. In a sense, art is a representation of the life and it appears as the expression of the artist’s comments and the definition of the life. So, each art work is an indicator of identity. However, after the second half of the 20th century, increasing art works on race, culture, gender or sexual preference of blunted or isolated groups- though it seems free expression of the individual- move away from the humane. In this context, the name, the birth place, the gender and the identity number are not the elements that can define the identity. Individual’s thought and behaviours determine his/her identity through collecting the data from his/her life and observations. In this study, it is going to be explained what is the concept of identity which occured especially in 1980s, and how it takes place in art works, and it is going to be explored the art and the artist’s identity in art works and movements from the period of enlightenment to nowadays.
