FUNCTIONAL ABILITIES AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AMONG THE ELDERLY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 2

Abstract

One of the key determinants of functional abilities among the elderly is physical activity. According to the current recommendations at least 10 000 steps per day in needed for maintaining good health. The aim of the study was to assess the average number of steps taken by the elderly and to compare with their level of physical function evaluated using pedometer.Individuals aged above 65 and residing in urban areas (n=34, F=24, M=10). The average age of the respondents was 72±4.8 years. Functional capacity was measured using Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale as well as Timed Up & Go (TUG) test, while physical activity was determined using OMRON pedometers, which were worn for 7 days. The number of points in the ADL scale was 5.93±0.5 (F=5.89±0.21, M=5.95±0.16), 7.94±1.0 (F=7.92±0.28, M=8.0±0) in the IADL scale and in the TUG test was 7.24±1.49 (F=7.33±1.58; M=7.0±1.25) (all the differences were not statistically significant). During the test period the average number of steps per day was 4933±2054 (F=4419±2052, M=6166±1521) (p=0.021). The relationship between the number of steps per day and TUG result was demonstrated (r=-0.52; p<0.01). TUG results also deteriorated (the test time extended) with the age of participants (r=0.48; p<0.01). In the model, after factoring in age multiple stepwise regression as well as number of steps per day, the number of steps per day proved to be the most powerful determinant of TUG results, contributing to 25.28% of change in TUG results, while age contributed to only 12.03% in change of TUG results. 1. Older men have a greater physical activity than women. 2. Women as well as men, despite the high basic functional capacity, did not show a satisfactory high physical activity level. 3. Number of steps per day was a stronger determinant of TUG results than age in the “rise and go” test that reflect early deterioration of physical functioning of an aging human body.
