Functional lipids in metabolic syndrome

Journal Title: Journal of Analytical Bio-Science - Year 2012, Vol 35, Issue 2

Abstract

Along with by the rapid increase in the number of elderly people, chronic diseases of the elderly have come to pose serious problems in Japan both medically and socioeconomically. The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorders, such as abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension and impaired fasting glucose, all of which contribute to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome is complicated and its precise mechanisms have not been elucidated, dietary lipids have been recognized as contributory factors in the development and prevention of cardiovascular risk clustering. Dietary functional lipids suppress the accumulation of abdominal adipose tissue and lipids in the liver and serum, and alleviate hypertension and type 2 diabetes through the transcriptional regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism. In particular, the role of functional lipids as adipocytokine regulators deserves attention with respect to alleviating the metabolic syndrome by dietary manipulation.
