FUNCTIONING OF CHAINS OF ENGLISH HIGH-FREQUENCY NOUNS COMBINABILITY MODELS

Abstract
The article considers the functioning of English high frequency nouns chains of combinability models. By chains the combinability of several models in a sentence are meant. The importance of the research of valency and combinability problems in theoretical and practical aspects is underlined. 31 chains of models of combinability of high frequency English nouns are singled out. The number of models capable of forming a noun chain of the maximum length is determined. The most frequent chains used in all types of texts (dAN, dNprpN, NprpdN, dNS) are dened. Special attention is paid to the impact of the word frequency on the length of the chain the chains are classied according to their frequency and occurrence. It is proved that frequency and occurrence are different things. The usage of high frequency chains of models in texts belonging to different functional styles is analysed. It is established that the simpler the chain is the more frequently it is used. It is presupposed that combinatory peculiarities of nouns are influenced by the pragmatics of texts communicative orientation. The data used in the article prove that the chains frequency is a parameter of texts belonging to different functional styles, genres and sublanguages. Distances between texts, which are the basis for the multidimensional text space are determined.
