Abstract

Physical activity subjects the organism to a variety of stresses which give rise to measurable physiological and biomechanical respon¬ses. The magnitude and degree of response varies with the duration, intensity, and perhaps timing of the activity stimulus. Movement requires activation and control of the musculoskeletal system; the cardiovascular and respiratory systems provide the ability to sustain this movement over extended periods. The magnitude of these changes depends largely on the intensity and duration. Physical activity has numerous beneficial physiologic effects. Most widely appreciated are its effects on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Specifically, physical activity reduces the risk for heart disease, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity, and metabolic syndrome; improves various other aspects of health and fitness, including aerobic capacity, muscle and bone strength, flexibility, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profiles; and reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.
