FUTURE NAVIGATORS’ PREPAREDNESS FOR CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION AS A PEDAGOGICAL PROBLEM

Abstract

Numerous researches illustrate complexity of creating positive high-quality cross-cultural interaction between representatives of different nationalities and cultures; therefore, future navigators’ training in cross-cultural communication in multinational and multicultural crews proves its relevance and requires special attention for solving the problem of improving professional and social communication efficiency within the crew. Such a training will contribute to improving understanding, reducing conflicts between communicants, and consequently to improving labour productivity, and the increase of navigation safety. Future navigators’ training in cross-cultural communication is one of the main and most important elements of their professional training. In the article, there have been analyzed definitions of these concepts: “future specialists’ readiness” and “preparedness”, interworking of these concepts in up-to-date scientific literature on Pedagogics, Psychology, Sociology, Juridical Sciences, etc. In the article the contents of the notions “future navigators’ readiness to cross-cultural communication” and “future navigators’ preparedness for cross-cultural communication” have been specified; the structural components of preparedness have been defined. The analyses of scientific researches on problems of readiness made it possible to define future navigators’ readiness for cross-cultural communication as a stable personal formation which is provided by personal qualities of future navigators and reflects a desire and aspiration of future navigators to make themselves proficient in theoretical knowledge and practical abilities, necessary for obtaining a positive result of cross-cultural communication within professional and social spheres of life. In the article it has been regarded that future navigators’ preparedness for cross-cultural communication is a result of their focused, qualified, task-oriented, sociocultural, sociolinguistic, and communicative training within a specially designed pedagogical process in a higher maritime educational establishment which presupposes mastering the created cross-cultural literacy, knowledge of cross-cultural communication theory as well as skills in correct and timely usage of this knowledge in real-case scenario. The structure of preparedness for such an activity is organic and integral, and, therefore, such components of its structure are specified: motivational-and-cognitive, action- and-creativity-centred, mental-and-reflective, and multicultural. Thus, readiness and preparedness of future navigators for cross-cultural communication are inalienable parts of their professional training and are very important for their efficient work, providing safety of navigation, creating a stable positive psychological microclimate in the crew, improving daily professional and interpersonal communication and reducing human communicative errors. The perspectives of further research are seen in consideration of the criteria, indices and levels of future navigators’ preparedness for cross-cultural communication.
