GAÏA, PROMÉTHÉE, LABYRINTHE: QUE NOUS PROPOSENT LES MYTHES POUR UN DÉVELOPPEMENT DURABLE ?

Journal Title: Present Environment and Sustainable Development - Year 2008, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

The ecological thinking is based on three myths: Gaïa, personifying the beautiful creation, Prometheus, symbolizing the conquering force of man, the Labyrinth as an image of mankind in a system he cannot dominate. This lecture intends to discuss the conditions on which men can cooperate with the ecosystem rather than to prey upon it. There will be three different approaches: general ecology, human geography and militant ecology; they all agree recognizing a degradation of the ecosystem due to mankind, to a general competition for the resources and to ignorance of the great regulations of the earth. We shall study an example in the field of sustainable town development, where the citizens will participate as soon as they are aware of the problems.
