Journal Title: Eurasian Journal of Family Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the five proton pump inhibitors; lansoprazole, esomeprazole, rabeprazole, pantoprazole and omeprazole. Methods: In addition to the demographic data, the patients were asked to fill out four questionnaires; reflux symptom index, gastroesophageal reflux questionnaire, gastroesophageal reflux disease health related quality of life scale and the work productivity and activity impairment questionnaire Results: A total of 100 patients were included in the study. In the gastroesophageal reflux questionnaire, pantoprazole was more effective than omeprazole. In the reflux symptom index esomeprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole made statistically significant decrease. The scores were significantly decreased in all groups in the gastroesophageal reflux health related quality of life scale, and the decrease was higher in pantoprazole group than in omeprazole group. In the work productivity and activity impairment questionnaire pantoprazole significantly decreased the effect of gastroesophageal reflux in preventing the work productivity. Pantoprazole, rabeprazole and esomeprazole were better in reducing the preventive effect of gastroesophageal reflux in daily activities than lanzoprazole and omeprazole. Conclusion: All of the proton pump inhibitors are effective in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, with various differences in their efficacies. The use of these differences may make changes in the clinical approach.
