ГЕНДЕРЛЕКТ В ДРАМАТИЧЕСКОМ ЭТЮДЕ А.П. ЧЕХОВА «НОЧЬ ПЕРЕД СУДОМ»

Abstract

The article dwells on the content of the term ‘genderlect’ interpreted as a set of linguistic and mental features of male and female speech. The author singles out prosodic markers of male and female genderlects (labialization, nasalization, melody) and their reflection in the works by A.P. Chekhov. The unfinished vaudeville The Night before the Trial, in which the peculiar features of male and female types of speech are revealed in a most salient manner, is analyzed separately. The article highlights the difference between the genderlects in oral colloquial speech and their reflection in the work of fiction, where they express the author’s artistic intentions. The genderlect analysis shows how A.P. Chekhov travesties in his vaudeville the roles of the seducer and the girl seduced, i.e. how he creates a gender inversion which would be the real vehicle of the plot of the sketch and create the comic foundation of the work of art.
