Journal Title: Eurasian Journal of Family Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Aim: The observed trends in general medicine in Bulgaria are similar to those in the other European countries. It is notable the migration of doctors to countries with higher living standards, imbalance in the distribution of General Practioners in different regions of the country, increasing the age of the working physicians. The aims of this study was to investigate the views of medical students to work as General Practitioners in Bulgaria after their graduation next year. Methods: The study used a self-administered anonymous questionnaire answered by 70 students. It is performed in the end of their training on general medicine, after the final exam of the discipline. Results: The results showed that the work as General Practitioners is unattractive for future doctors. The reluctance of students to work as a general practitioner is related to the large share of bureaucratic work, limited opportunities for high-tech medical procedures, low payment and low prestige. Conclusion: The attractiveness of this profession for young doctors would increase after reduction of bureaucratic work, better payment and access to modern technologies in medicine, improving training opportunities and providing changes in stereotypes and attitudes of doctors working in this sector.
