Glazed pottery of the South-Eastern Crimea from the excavations of the Tsarev settlement
Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 13
Abstract
Data on findings of glazed ceramics produced in the Southeastern Crimea from the Tsarev hill fort site excavations is presented. Their typology, chronology and topography are suggested. The analysis of the 165 units of sampled fragments and intact vessels has been carried out in accordance with a classification scheme which comprises 4 distribution levels: 1) belonging to certain production centers; 2) functional purpose of items; 3) morphological features of vessels; 4) specificity of ornamentation. According to these features, basic groups, types and series of vessels have been singled out that are characteristic of the three major chronological periods: 1. the early 14th century; 2. the 1330s; 3. second half of the 14th century. It is noted that the earliest findings of ceramics dated by periods 1 and 2 were encountered mainly in the southeastern part of the Tsarev hill fort settlement site. These are predominantly bowls on a footring base lacking ornamentation and covered with green transparent glazing. Starting with period 3 (second half of the 14th century), vessels from the Southeastern Crimea had been widely spread throughout the entire area of the site. The assortment of vessels used at that time, along with common jars and bowls, had been expanded to include aftobes and apothecary amphorae.
