Graphical presentation of results of field trials with F1 CMS ogura hybrids of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.)

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2013, Vol 34, Issue 1

Abstract

In oilseed rape breeding and other crops as well it is very important to understand the variability and interrelationships of basic phenotypic traits, especially agronomic, that help to determine the criteria for the selection of high yielding genotypes resulting from appropriate relations of these characteristics. This paper describes several graphical methods for presenting the results of field trials. The plant material consisted of four restored F1 CMS ogura hybrids: PN 4534/01, PN 4556/01, PN 4538/01, PN 4540/01 and four non-restored CMS ogura hybrids: Kaszub F1, Lubusz F1, Mazur F1, Pomorzanin F1. These hybrids were investigated in the field trials in two growing seasons (2002/2003 and 2003/2004), and two locations. Four traits, such as seed yield, number of seeds per pod, weight of 1000 seeds and oil content were selected for graphical presentation of these relations. Positional characteristics of investigated hybrids for individual traits were shown in boxplots. The correlations between traits were presented in a scatterplot. The relationships between the objects were presented in the graph as a parallel coordinate plot.Visualization of experimental results is a good method for the presentation of relationships between the traits and the genotypes which can be used as an alternative tool as compared to the traditional methods or it might be very useful as a supplement.
