GRAVE MONUMENTS IN TERMS OF RELATIONS WITH OTHER BUILDINGS

Abstract
The importance paid by Turks to tombstones is a result of belief of death which lies back to pre-Islamic era. Tomb monuments evaluated under two groups as cupola (kümbet) and mausoleum (türbe) exhibit very different forms in terms of shape. As well as square, cylindrical, polygonal body shaped tombs with conical dome or cone, and decorated with very rich brick and stones there are also very simple and plain structures in terms of architecture and ornamentation. Many tombs have been constructed independently within entirety of Turkish art. Moreover, from very early ages there have been an important number of tombs constructed together with other buildings or Islamic-social complexes. The “afterlife belief” in Islam can be considered as the main motive for connecting tombs to other buildings or structures.
