Abstract

Jan Szymczak MUSHROOMS IN ABUNDANCE There are not many mentions of mushrooms in our chronicles and yearbooks, but we often find them in other sources. The oldest one, Passio Sancti Adalperti Martiris, from the 11th century, is about Saint Wojciech – Adalbert of Tegernsee. The oldest sources give two Latin names for mushrooms. The oldest name, fungus, had prevailed and was used later and the name boleti, buleti is used to refer to porcini, a type of edible mushrooms. Another important sources are the accounts from the court of King Władysław Jagiełło and Queen Jadwiga (Rationes curie Vladislai Iagellonis et Hedvigis regum Poloniae 1388–1420). Mushrooms were also found on the menu of King Casimir III the Great as well as Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and his son, Wenceslaus IV. In the 16th century, Mikołaj Rej of Nagłowice and Anzelm Gostomski recommended drying and pickling mushrooms for winter. There are many recipes with mushrooms in Compendium ferculorum (1682), the oldest preserved cookery book, edited by Stanisław Czerniecki. The best literary description of mushroom picking can be found in Adam Mickiewicz’s Pan Tadeusz in Book Three, „Flirtation”. One should remember, however, that not all mushrooms are tasty as the inedible species were in the past and still are poisonous, their consumption may be fatal and they are sometimes used as lethal poison.
