Guillain – Barré Syndrome; Etiology, Clinical Findings and Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 3

Abstract

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is one of the most frequently seen acute polyneuropathy in neurology practice and characterized by progressive motor weakness and areflexia. Plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) are treatment choices. In this study, clinical and laboratory findings, and treatment results of 24 patients (16 males and 8 females) with the age range of 16 to 54 years (mean 33.3 ± 14.2) admitted to our department from 1999 through 2004 with clinic findings of GBS and/or GBS variants are evaluated. We performed plasmapheresis in the first week following diagnosis. Five-seven exchanges were applied to 20-4 patients respectively. Thirty two applications at the beginning were performed with plasma and the rest of the all procedures were made with albumin. Adverse reactions were seen during exchange such as chatheter plugging in 3 patients and problems associated with technique in one patient. However, all of the exchanges could be completed. Fifty percent of patients with GBS improved completely, but transient neurological disabilities were observed in 37.5% of them and 12.5% of them died. As a result, plasma exchange is an effective therapy in GBS.
