Haematological profile of messinese goat kids and their dams during the first month post-partum
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2011, Vol 29, Issue 3
Abstract
The neonatal period represents a transition phase from the sheltered intrauterine to the exposed extrauterine environment. Changes in haematological profile in five pairs of twin kids and their dams were investigated over a month after the birth. During that period red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), haemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and platelets (PLT) level were determined in all animals. Two-way ANOVA showed an increase in RBC (P<0.001), WBC (P<0.0001), MCV (P<0.0001), MCHC (P<0.0001) and PLT (P<0.001). Knowledge of the blood physiological reference values in goat kids provides information useful for the diagnosis and treatment of some neonatal diseases and contributes to recognizing the adaptation mechanisms developing over their first month of life.

Effects of feed supplementation with increasing levels of organic acids on growth performance, carcass traits, gut microbiota and pH, plasma metabolites, and immune response of broilers
The effects of organic acids included in broiler feed on growth performance, carcass traits, caecal microbiota, duodenal pH, plasma metabolites, and immune response were studied. A total of 210 one-day-old female chicken...
Operant conditioning of dogs (Canis familiaris) for identification of humans using scent lineup
Training of dogs to distinguish individual human scent has no well-established scientific basis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the progress made over three consecutive training phases and to compare the training...
Service cock only indirectly affects hatchability in laying hens
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of service sire on fertilization rate and loses during hatching as a way of increasing the accuracy of breeding value estimation of layers for hatchability. Layers f...
Effects of replacing rapeseed cake with linseed cake in a corn-grass silage-based diet for milking cows
The aim of this study was to evaluate the substitution of rapeseed cake by an equivalent amount of linseed cake in the diets of dairy cows, and the effects of such equivalent substitution on the proportion of feed consum...
A novel pig gene, CPNE1, differentially expressed in the muscle tissues from Wujin pigs and Large White pigs
The mRNA differential display technique was performed to investigate gene expression differences in the longissimus dorsi muscle from Wujin and Large White pigs. A fragment of one differentially expressed gene was isolat...
