Halitosis – review of literature

Abstract
Introduction: Halitosis (bad breath) is a problem affecting 15-60% of the population and it is the third most frequent reason for visiting the dentist. Aim of the study: To describe causes, detection methods and treatment of halitosis on the basis of literature.Conclusion: Halitosis is basically caused by oral bacteria that produce volatile compounds, including sulphur ones. They are the products of metabolism of bacteria, usually due to metabolism of aminoacids and peptides. The most frequent method of detection is organoleptic examination. Treatment is usually combined.
