Root canal retreatment – the role of organic solvents in gutta-percha removal from root canals

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 6

Abstract

Introduction: the primary goal of root canal retreatment is to gain access to apical foramen following to complete removal of root filling materials. In most cases the gutta- percha and the sealer are mechanically removed by means of hand and rotary files. In root canal retreatment, the solvents are also recommended and they are useful substances in softening root canal filling inside the root canal system. However, in the literature there are various concepts about using gutta-percha solvents. The more residual filling material in root canal after using solvent and the effect on the ability of root canal dentin were observed. Aim of the study: on the basis of literature review contemporary concepts of the efficiency of root canal retreatment methods with using solvents have been reported. Moreover, the types of solvents, the most frequently used in endodontic retreatment, and their advantages and side-effects have been discussed. Conclusion: : using organic solvents can be helpful, especially during treatment difficult cases. Because of the toxicity of many organic solvents available on the market, only special gutta-percha solvent should be used in clinical practice.
