Healthy newborns deliviered on daily hemodialysis for chronic renal failure – series of three cases

Abstract
We present a case-series of three pregnant women hemodialysed for chronic renal failure. Two of them conceived at stage IV of chronic renal disease, and one while on chronic hemodialysis. All three started daily dialysis program 5-6x4h/week. The dialysis dose adjustments followed predialysis serum urea concentration, with the intention to keep it below 100 mg/dl. In all patients the interdialytic accumulation of uremic products was observed. The course of the initial two trimesters of pregnancy has been uneventful in all three women, but malnurishement, severe in one of them was present form the onset of the third trimester. All three pregnancies were terminated with caesarean section at 30-36 gestation week. Every pregnancy resulted in birth of a healthy newborn. Following the delivery, one of patients could stop dialysis program. We hold the view that intensive daily hemodialysis, started early during preganancy allows for nearly physiological pregnancy course. What is more, hemodialysis treatment during preganancy, most probably, does not affect progression of renal failure, as it could be seen in one of our patients.
