HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF METHONOLIC EXTRACT OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA IN RATS

Journal Title: Mintage journal of pharmaceutical and medical sciences - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 6

Abstract

Objective: In the present study hepatoprotective activity was carried out in vivo models which include different. Treatment with aqueous leaf extract of H. sabdariffa caused significant increase in the serum levels. Methods: All the models induced successfully, shows significant increase in serum levels like SGPT, SGOT, and ALP compared to normal control group animals. The results revealed that the plant extract at a dose of 200mg/kg showed hepatoprotective activity, significant decrease in SGPT, SGOT was observed and was compared to disease control group in the given model. The number of studies performed with H.sabdariffa is less and need to concentrate more and more. The most commonly used animal model in these studies was rat. Results: The results were further supported by histopathology which shows its activity. It is important to point out that a low dose of this drug is able to prevent liver toxicity in a quite short experimental period. The only study which analysed different doses of silymarin showed a dose response pattern. Conclusion: As far as the potential mechanisms of these compounds are concerned H. Sabdariffa showed result which is found significant to the normal control group.
