Histomorphological study of ovarian neoplasms in a tertiary care center: A five years study
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Ovarian tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasm of epithelial, stromal, and germ cell origin. Even in a single class of tumor, there is exists inherent heterogeneity with biological behaviour ranging from benign to the highly aggressive malignant tumor. The management of the patient also depends on the stological type of the tumor. This facts fascinated us to undertake the present study. Aim: To analyse the modes of presentation and various histopathological patterns of ovarian tumors. Materials and Methods: The present retrospective and prospective study was carried out in the Department of Pathology, Shree M.P. Shah Government Medical College, Jamnagar, Gujarat, India from May 2013 to April 2018. All the histopathology slides of ovarian tumors during the study period were retrieved and reviewed along with the patient’s clinical features and gross findings. Data thus collected were analysed. Result: Out of total 196 cases of ovarian tumors 165 (82.18%) were benign, 8(4.08%) were borderline and 23 (11.74%) were malignant tumors. Surface epithelial tumors constituted majority of the tumors 73.94%. Serous cyst adenoma (36.22%) was the most common benign tumor.Serous cyst adenocarcinoma (5.61%)was the most common malignant tumor of the ovary. Tumors are seen over a wide range of 8-82 years. 65.82% of patients whose samples were received belong to age group of 20-39 years. 89.8% of the lesions were unilateral and 76.53% lesions having cystic consistency. Conclusion: By knowing clinical data, sonography findings, and gross features, we can narrow our differential diagnosis and reach to the final microscopic diagnosis in most of the cases in very cost effective manner.
