HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF 2000 KILOMETERS LONG

Abstract
The article analyzes the achievements and problems of Ukrainian Historian and contemporary historiography in the realization of international project of Central-Eastern European Institute. The importance of Great Lithuanian Principality and Rich Pospolyta for the Central Eastern Europe concept is considered as the embodiment of common sociocultural and political heritage of Polish, Byelorussian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian people, as well as the model of European community in the early modern time epoch. Ukrainian historians revised the traditional soviet historiography of Ukrainian history. They, together with Belarusian and Lithuanian colleagues, considered the history of Galytsko-Volynska and Great Lithuanian Principality as their state tradition. Belarusian historians not only represented several concepts of the beginning period of Great Lithuanian Principality, but put forward their own conceptual basis of Belarusian history as part of this medieval eastern European state, recognizing it as Belarus-Lithuanian state. Ukrainian people contributed greatly to political and cultural development of that state but Ukrainian scientists have not yet determined their Lithuanian heritage. Only now, when the international scientific project on Central-Eastern European history is being realized, Ukrainian scientist face the need to define their position on the role of Ukraine in the Great Lithuanian Principality. This role may be as a temporary member of the principality or one of its creator and heir-at-law. In case of the last variant, Ukrainians are to reject the traditional regional approach to the study of history of those times. Ukrainian historians will have to join the elaboration of general problems of this state and start developing classical Lithuanian studies. The public challenge has been already outlined in 2010. The project «2000 km of history» has been launched, the main goal of which is to find common historical heritage of three peoples who created a really European state – Great Lithuanian Principality, Ruske and Zhemaltiisky.
