ROMANIA AND FINLAND: FORMATION OF THE FLANKS OF «CORDON SANITAIRE» IN 1918–1920

Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Історія" - Year 2018, Vol 310, Issue 298

Abstract

The coming to power of the Bolsheviks in Russia in 1917 and then in Hungary in 1919 led to the aggression of these countries against neighbor states in order to enlarge Soviet power in Europe. Finland and Romania became the barriers to Bolshevism in Europe in 1918–1920 and managed not only to defend their independence, but also to become regional powers, shields of Europe from Bolshevism (Finland for Scandinavia, Romania for Balkans), and flanks of Cordon Sanitaire. Finland waged the war against Soviet Russia on both sides of the Finnish Gulf, but still on the one front. Romania waged the war on two fronts: against Soviet Russia and against Soviet Hungary. It was the most important moment for Finland and Romania that not only to defend their independence, but also to retain national integrity from the Bolsheviks’ attempt to split the nation by creating artificial Soviet autonomies: Karelia and Moldova, as bases for further Soviet enlargement to Finland and to Romania
