POLES AND RUSSIANS – DIFFICULT NEIGHBORHOOD

Abstract

International relations from the very beginning were a complicated and intricate phenomenon, very often burdened by significant historical and political events, which influenced the formation of mutual prejudice and antipathy. This, in turn, had led to the formation of stereotypes (most often negative), which are commonly known as material is not especially susceptible to change. That is exactly the situation looks like in the case of two neighboring Slavic countries – Poland and Russia. The given article is dedicated to the problem of a difficult neighborhood of Poles and Russians. Throughout the entire work author shows periods which strongly influenced on a mutual perception of the inhabitants of Poland and Russia, from the beginning of the 16th century and to the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in the summer of 2014. The purpose of the article was to show in a diachronic perspective five centuries of neighborhood of Poland and Russia, with describing of periods in which relations between Polse and Russians was extremely tensed, only rarely improved due to short political or cultural «thaws». The article is also an attempt to answer the question: is it possible in the near future appearing of a some radical change in the relations between the two states, so different and the same time so similar to each other. While working on the text, the author started from the metods of analysis and criticism of the literature, in order to use, in its essential part, his own experiences, based on the intuition and observation. The article might interest slavists, historians, researchers exploring the problems of sociology and ethnopsychology, as well as any other reader wishing to increase their understanding of political, historical and cultural relations between Poland and Russia.
