Historical review of the experimental acute pancreatitis
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a severe disease associated with high risk of complications and mortality. Since the beginning of the 20th century, comprehensive studies have been carried out regarding its causes, pathogenesis and course to improve the efficacy of management of the inflammatory process originating from the pancreas. Studies in patients are limited; therefore, animal models have been widely used for the past few decades.Aim. The present review is to outline the advances in AP research in animal models.Material and methods. The present report reviews Polish and foreign literature concerning animal models used for AC research.Discussion. The review presents the history and major assumptions of the following experimental AP models:1) AP induced by excessive endocrine stimulation, 2) AP induced by choline-deficient diet supplemented with 0.5% ethionine,3) arginine-induced AP, 4) angiogenic AP, 5) AP induced by creation of a closed duodenal loop, 6) AP induced by bile duct obstruction, 7) AP induced by pancreatic duct perfusion. All the experimental models mentioned and their numerous modifications were designed to reproduce most accurately the pathomechanisms leading to AP. It should be stressed that Polish researchers (in the Białystok centre headed by prof. Gabryelewicz, in particular) have considerably contributed to the development of experimental models and studies on the pathogenesis and new therapeutic options for AP.

Intramedullary fixation of humeral fractures and non-unions of humerus
Humeral fractures are considered as a difficult clinical problem. Such fractures had been treated non-operatively for many years and early trials with plate fixation were often followed by non-union. The creation of intr...
