HVDC Converter Stations to Enable Offshore Wind Farm Integration with Power System

Journal Title: Acta Energetica - Year 2016, Vol 27, Issue 2

Abstract

The main problem of the development of offshore wind farms is their integration with the existing power infrastructure. Electricity can be transmitted over HVAC and HVDC cable lines. Because of its many advantages, HVDC technology seems the target solution for offshore wind farms. The paper presents the high-power electronic converter technologies currently applied in HVDC substations to enable offshore wind farm integration with the power system. Technical aspects of the converter station technologies are presented, as well the accomplished standardisation stages. Also presented is each HVDC converter station technology’s potential (advantages and disadvantages) in the area of potential ancillary services that the national power system (NPS) can provide.
