Identifying the "master" of some medieval chalices
Journal Title: Brukenthal. Acta Musei - Year 2006, Vol 2, Issue 0
Abstract
Five of the most valuable medieval chalices in Transylvania, from the artistic point of view, are without any doubt the works of the same goldsmith. The chalice originated from the Evangelic Church in Mosna - Meschen is dated 1508. All the contemporary documentary sources of the magistrate and of the goldsmiths’ guild in Sibiu – Hermannstadt converge to the conclusion that the „Maestro” of these works was Johannes Fleischer Aurifaber / Goldschmied, active between 1468-1523. His masterpiece is the chalice of the Evangelic Church in Sibiu (c. 1508), with a spectacular adornment of filigree and enamel, in the so-called and renowned technique in Europe as „modo transsilvano”, which alternates with a lace of filigree with pearls of silver „in modo raguseo”. The topographic and stylistic naming of the medieval decorative techniques attests a long experience and practice of them by the masters from those determinated regions. The beauty and the punctiliousness of the ornamental composition of all five chalices attributed to Johannes Aurifaber, and their wonderful achieve, reflect the goldsmith’s art of a real „Maestro” in Sibiu.
